Bill Marba posted the following. He said he's driven down twice. Once with the wife and kids - 5 1/2 days, and once by himself - 2 days. I have driven from Kansas City, MO to the island of Cozumel twice. Make sure that you have a good LIST of everything you have packed--if you have that then you have a very good chance that they will NOT make you unload everything at the border. Make sure you have the title to the vehicle in the name of the person driving. Also, they will probably ask you why you are driving there, etc. just tell them you are taking a very long vacation (thats what I did). Also, you have to have a valid credit card to get the windshield sticker--they will not accept cash. Stay on hwy 180 most of the way and just "hug" the gulf of mexico. Basically the route is from brownsville, tx straight south to Tampico, then vera cruz, villa hermosa, escarcega,--over to chetumal then North on 307 to chemuyil. The road from the border to tampico is mostly only 2 lanes and it will be slow going if you get behind a truck/bus, etc. and for sure you will. between Tampico and Vera Cruz there are places where the road is absolutely HORRIBLE so take it slow. Once you hit vera cruz take the brand new highway--the "autopista" You will have to pay around $30usd in tolls between vera cruz and villa hermosa but its totally worth it as you will be one of the only people on the brand new road and you can go 100mph if you want as there will be no one there. Be careful if you choose to drive at night as a lot of the two lane roads have NO shoulder and people will walk and ride bicycles at night with no lights or anything and you can really have problems if you dont see them. Also, from time to time between towns you will see animals (horses, cattle, etc) near or on the road. All in all, both times for me was an adventure and it really is not that bad I buy my insurance online from GE seguros and there is another one called "ACE" that is pretty good--you can pay online and print your policy to have it before you even leave GOOD LUCK and may the "force" be with you! Bill
